Routine Vaccines

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

COVID-19

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines.

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Paraguay. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given. Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

Hepatitis B

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages to Paraguay.

Measles

Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as part of the routine childhood vaccination series.

Rabies

Rabid dogs are commonly found in Paraguay. However, if you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Paraguay, rabies treatment is often available.
Consider rabies vaccination before your trip if your activities mean you will be around dogs or wildlife.
Travelers more likely to encounter rabid animals include
• Campers, adventure travelers, or cave explorers (spelunkers)
• Veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers handling animal specimens
• Visitors to rural areas
Since children are more likely to be bitten or scratched by a dog or other animals, consider rabies vaccination for children traveling to Paraguay.

Recommended for most travelers, especially those staying with friends or relatives or visiting smaller cities or rural areas.

Yellow Fever

Required if traveling from a country with risk of YF virus transmission and ≥1 year of age.

Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay.

All residents and visitors are required by law to carry an acceptable form of identification at all times. Foreign residents are issued with identity cards. You should carry a photocopy of the details page of your passport, as well as a copy of your entrance stamp. Don't become involved with drugs, as there are severe penalties for drug trafficking and possession. Prison sentences are mandatory, without bail, and prison standards are poor. Homosexuality is not illegal and there is a small, active LGBT community in Asunción. There are no provisions, however, in Paraguayan law guaranteeing freedom from discrimination on any grounds, including sexual orientation. Same-sex marriages or unions are not recognised in Paraguay and public displays of affection between same-sex couples are likely to be frowned upon.

Asunción

Asunción is the capital city of Paraguay, bordered by the Paraguay River. It’s known for its grand López Palace, the seat of government housing the president’s offices. Nearby, the National Pantheon of Heroes has a mausoleum and plaques commemorating Paraguayan historical figures. Unauthorized ticket vendors

Unauthorized ticket vendors operating in the Asuncion bus terminal, badger travellers into buying tickets for substandard or non-existent bus services. This situation is avoided by ensuring one only purchases tickets from and accredited ticket booth.

Card game scam

There are card game scams where the scammer will make it seem like it is lucrative, with participants ""winning"" money. However, the scammer's buddies (the participants) are in on it, so your chances of winning are next to none.

International Driving Permit 1949 is required

• The most common religion in Paraguay is Roman Catholicism.
• Don't wear expensive clothes or jewellery in public - keep a low profile to avoid the unwanted attention of pickpockets.
• Don't be surprised if you're touched while meeting - local culture is more intimate.
• Don't necessarily talk about politics and religion.
• Don't forget to drink national drink "Mate" (pronounced mah-tay) with the served straw.
• Don't take pictures of locals without permission.
• Don't forget the rainy season takes place from December to March.
