Routine Vaccines

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

COVID-19

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines.

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to New Caledonia.
Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.
Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.
Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

Hepatitis B

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages to New Caledonia.

Measles

Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as part of the routine childhood vaccination series.

Typhoid

Recommended for most travelers, especially those staying with friends or relatives or visiting smaller cities or rural areas.

Required if traveling from a country with risk of YF virus transmission and ≥1 year of age, including transit >12 hours in an airport located in a country with risk of YF virus transmission.
Note: In the event of an epidemic threat to the territory, a specific vaccination certificate may be required.

You will need 3 months validity remaining on your passport from the date you intend to leave.

New Caledonia is an overseas territory of France. A mix of French and local laws apply. By law, you must always have photo identification with you. Don't use or carry illegal drugs. Penalties include fines and prison sentences, even for small amounts. Same-sex marriage is legal, but same-sex relationships aren't widely accepted outside of Noumea. Outside of tourist areas, standards of dress and behaviour are conservative. Dress and behave appropriately. You need permission from customary authorities to visit certain areas. If in doubt, follow local advice. Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and heavy fines.

Theft

Violent crime directed to tourists is just about unheard of, even petty crime is minimal. But that doesn't mean you should tempt fate by leaving an expensive camera in full view on the beach or on the front seat of your rental car. Always, everywhere, take care of your valuables.

• The most common religion in New Caledonia is Catholicism.
• Don't forget to dress conservatively outside of tourist areas.
• Don't forget community is significant part of culture - decisions are made for good of one tribe over individual gain. Clan elders enjoy higher respect in decision making too.
• Don't disrespect local Kanaks - show respect in personal interactions.
• Don't forget some restaurants or casinos don't allow casual wear.
• Don't be surprised by local land ownership rules - individual cannot own land as the land belongs to all Caledonians. Tribal clans use the law of covenants to regulate land sharing.
• Don't necessarily hail on taxis from the street - they are designated taxi ranks for it or use a phone booking.
• Don't forget cyclone season is from November to April.
