Routine Vaccines

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

Hepatitis A

Consider for most travelers; recommended for travelers at higher risk (e.g. visiting smaller cities, villages, or rural areas where exposure might occur through food or water; or prone to "adventurous eating")

Hepatitis B

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages to Germany.

Measles

Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as part of the routine childhood vaccination series.

Rabies

Germany is free of dog rabies. However, rabies may still be present in wildlife species, particularly bats. CDC recommends rabies vaccination before travel only for people working directly with wildlife. These people may include veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers working with specimens from mammalian species.

For travelers moving or traveling to TBE-endemic areas
TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary.
TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found.

You will need 3 months validity remaining on your passport from the date you intend to leave.

You Don't have to carry your passport with you while in Germany, but if you're asked to show your passport and you Don't have it with you, the police may escort you to wherever your passport is being kept so that you can show it to them. It is illegal to cross German pedestrian crossings when the red pedestrian light is on. Offenders risk a fine and payment of all costs in the event of an accident. You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries. There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food required for medical reasons.

Terrorist attacks

Germany has unfortunately been linked to terrorist attacks beyond its borders (the leaders of the 9/11 attacks on the United States in 2001 were students based in Germany), and has seen a number of horrific incidents in recent years. But, just how worried should you be as a traveler?

In July 2006, homemade bombs were found on trains heading out of Cologne. In September 2007, the Sauerland terrorist cell was busted just as radical Islamists were planning a series of car bombings in Germany. In November 2010, bomb scares and evacuations led to an increase in police presence and closures of major buildings.

In 2016, Germany saw two terror related incidents; a shooting rampage in a Munich shopping center killing nine people and injuring a dozen, and the Berlin Christmas Market attack, where a truck ploughed into market goers killing 12 people and injuring more than 50 others.

There is also a rise in the number of right-wing extremists in Germany. As a result of these incidents and others not mentioned, security has increased across the country, and alerts are released by government travel advisories whenever threats emerge.

• Avoid shouting across rooms or drawing attention to yourself in public. Unruly behaviour may be viewed as a lack of self-control.
• Do not press a German to revise their decision on a matter if they have already given you their response. For example, insisting that they do something after they have already politely declined can be seen as intrusive, even if it is coming from a good place (e.g. asking them to accompany you somewhere or help themselves to more food).
• Avoid cancelling on a German at the last minute or being late. If you anticipate delays, give your German counterpart a fair warning of your tardiness.
• Avoid clouding what you mean out of modesty or shyness. Germans prefer straightforward honest answers to questions. Directness and clarity is highly valued.
• Do not talk about the actions of the Germans in the World Wars as if your German counterpart was there. For example, - Avoid saying “You Germans did this...” as if they need to claim personal responsibility. Your German counterpart was likely born after these events and had no part in them.
• Never compare a German to Hitler or the Nazis of World War II or express anti-Semitic sentiments (even jokingly). There is a strong policy against Nazi symbolism and hate speech.
• Do not refer to the era of the Third Reich as “Nazi Germany”. That is not what it was called.
• Don't make a circular motion using the index finger while pointing to the side of one's head - it's a rude gesture saying someone is crazy or deranged.
• Do not ask for ‘Kölsch’ (beer from Cologne). Drink ‘Alt’ in Düsseldorf. Vice versa
