Routine Vaccines

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

COVID-19

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines.

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Barbados.
Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.
Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.
Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

Hepatitis B

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages to Barbados.

Measles

Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as part of the routine childhood vaccination series.

Rabies

Barbados is free of dog rabies. However, rabies may still be present in wildlife species, particularly bats. CDC recommends rabies vaccination before travel only for people working directly with wildlife. These people may include veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers working with specimens from mammalian species.

Recommended for most travelers, especially those staying with friends or relatives or visiting smaller cities or rural areas.

Yellow Fever

Required if traveling from a country with risk of YF virus transmission and ≥1 year of age.1 This requirement excludes Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago unless an outbreak is occurring.

There are severe penalties for all drug offences. Pack all luggage yourself and Don't carry anything through customs for anyone else. It’s an offence for anyone, including children, to dress in camouflage clothing. Local attitudes towards the LGBT community are mostly conservative throughout the Caribbean. Public displays of affection (such as hand-holding or kissing) between opposite or same-sex couples are uncommon. Certain homosexual acts are illegal. LGBT travellers should be mindful of local attitudes and be aware that public displays of affection may attract unwanted and negative attention.

Petty Crime

Although visits are generally trouble-free, tourists are most likely to be victims of petty crime and crimes of opportunity.
Pedlars selling goods on the island are no worse than those in other Caribbean destinations or Mexico, but prepare yourself for the possibility of some intense hassling.
St. Lawrence Gap, on the southern coast of the island, is one place to take care particularly at night.
When driving, don't stop if flagged down, and keep cars doors locked
There are many reports on TripAdvisor of drug dealers approaching tourists on the street and on beaches offering to sell illegal drugs.
Local police in Barbados take the possession and use of marijuana just as seriously as other hard drugs. Also note that you are not covered by your travel insurance policy if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs and you have an accident.

Religion/Things Not to Do

  • The most common religion in Barbados is Christianity
  • Don't wear camouflage or military coloured clothes - it's technically illegal.
  • Don't touch the Manchineel fruit - they can be toxic.
  • Don't sunbath nude or topless.
  • Don't show your homosexuality in public.
  • Don't forget to keep a more formal approach. In line with British influence, Bajans prefer formal greeting and meeting - a handshake between both sexes, followed by salutations like "Good evening", "Please to meet you" and similar. Hugging and kissing are usually reserved for friends and family.
  • Don't hesitate to introduce yourself first to a Bajan rather than relying on them to initiate an introduction.
  • Don't light a fire on the beach.
  • Don't do drugs.
  • Don't disturb nesting sea turtles.
  • Don't necessary get too close to local monkeys - respect them.
  • Don't wear beachwear outside the beach or poolside. Dress appropriately when not on the beach - casual wear is fine.
