Routine Vaccines

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

COVID-19

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines.

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Hungary.
Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.
Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.
Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

Hepatitis B

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages to Hungary.

Measles

Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as part of the routine childhood vaccination series.

Rabies

Hungary is free of dog rabies. However, rabies may still be present in wildlife species, particularly bats. CDC recommends rabies vaccination before travel only for people working directly with wildlife. These people may include veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers working with specimens from mammalian species.

For travelers moving or traveling to TBE-endemic areas
TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary.
TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found.

You will need 3 months validity remaining on your passport from the date you intend to leave.

Carry your passport at all times. You must be able to show some form of ID if requested. A photocopy is not acceptable. Hungarian laws on the possession and use of drugs are strict. Same-sex relationships and civil partnerships are legal in Hungary but same-sex marriages aren't recognised in Hungarian law. Budapest is generally tolerant and open; the city hosts the largest Pride Festival in Central Europe with an annual turnout of over 10,000 people. Recent Pride events have passed without incident, but historically there have been counter-events which have led to confrontation. You should be aware that outside of Budapest public displays of affection may be frowned upon or attract unwanted attention. You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries. There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food required for medical reasons.

Budapest

Budapest, Hungary’s capital, is bisected by the River Danube. Its 19th-century Chain Bridge connects the hilly Buda district with flat Pest. A funicular runs up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, where the Budapest History Museum traces city life from Roman times onward. Trinity Square is home to 13th-century Matthias Church and the turrets of the Fisherman’s Bastion, which offer sweeping views.

Bar scams

The scam reported by many male travellers is one which starts with an ego boost. Two attractive women will approach you in the street asking if you want to accompany them to a bar. The next thing you know, you are enjoying a meal or drinks, but when the bill arrives, the intention of the new friendship is made evident.

Two frightening sights - a bill of up to thousands of dollars and Hungarian men of barbarian proportions standing over you, waiting to escort you to the nearest ATM.

Taxi drivers can also be involved in the scam. They will suggest bars to take you to, because they are getting a commission from the owners who are waiting to rip you off.

Most of the places that have been reported to be out to get you, are located in Budapest's fifth district, on or near the main tourist street, the Váci utca.

It's best to avoid bars and clubs that can't be easily accessed from street level, for example a place that you can only get to by elevator. Also be wary of places that don't clearly display menus.

If you walk into a club that ticks those boxes and also happens to have their own ATM, you are asking for trouble.

There have also been reports of drink spiking, particularly in strip clubs.

Many tourists have warned about the Milady Nightclub - formerly known as Nirvana, for it's corrupt and violent antics. It's located at V. Szent Szent István krt. 15.

• The most common religion in Hungary is Roman Catholicism
• Don't clink glasses when toasting in Hungary - it's associated with the execution of the 13 Martyrs of Arad in 1849.
• Don't mention these topics when in Hungary - Trianon, gypsies, jokes about then being "Hungry".
• Don't forget to shake hands when greeting. Friends kiss one another lightly on both cheeks, usually starting with left.
• Don't call Hungarians Slavic - even Hungary is in the Slavic region, they - Don't have Slavic origin.
• Don't give a foreign wine - the Hungarians are proud of the wines they produce.
• Don't forget to know your frӧccs - Hungarian summer drink. It's wine mixed with soda, but there are various ratios and names, e.g. Krúdy frӧccs or sportfrӧccs.
