Routine Vaccines

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

COVID-19

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines.

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to El Salvador.
Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.
Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.
Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin

Hepatitis B

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages to El Salvador.

Measles

Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as part of the routine childhood vaccination series.

Rabies

Rabid dogs are commonly found in El Salvador. If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in El Salvador, there may be limited or no rabies treatment available.
Consider rabies vaccination before your trip if your activities mean you will be around dogs or wildlife.
Travelers more likely to encounter rabid animals include
• Campers, adventure travelers, or cave explorers (spelunkers)
• Veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers handling animal specimens
• Visitors to rural areas
Since children are more likely to be bitten or scratched by a dog or other animals, consider rabies vaccination for children traveling to El Salvador.

Recommended for most travelers, especially those staying with friends or relatives or visiting smaller cities or rural areas.

Yellow Fever

Required if traveling from a country with risk of YF virus transmission and ≥1 year of age, including transit >12 hours in an airport located in a country with risk of YF virus transmission.

You will need 6 months validity remaining on your passport from the date of entry.

There are severe penalties for drug trafficking and drug use in El Salvador. Prisons are overcrowded and violent. There are no legal provisions for same-sex marriage or adoption in El Salvador. (The Family Code establishes that marriage should happen between a man and a woman, although the Constitution does not make this specific point.) Due to prevailing conservative attitudes and the risk of harassment to same-sex couples public displays of affection are not recommended. Robbery

Robberies and muggings are also common on buses and other forms of public transport. Passengers are frequently robbed en-route, at roadblocks, and at bus stops.

Locals have warned about the area surrounding the Tica bus station, where Hotel San Carlos is located. This is an area notorious for violent street crimes. Avoid walking alone around here, even during the day. If you need to go to the Tica bus station, it's best to take a taxi.

Taxis and shootouts crimes

Don't forget to shake hands when greeting same-sex only. A woman has to extend the hand first (if she wants) when greeting with a man. The common greeting is a slight bow of the head and greeting of "salaam alaikum" which should be replied to with "wa alaikum us salam".

International Driving Permit 1949 is required

• Don't ignore the fact that El Salvador has one of the highest homicide and violence levels in the world - always be cautious. Majority of crimes are never resolved.
• Don't be surprised with touching in conversations - it's quite common. Direct eye contact is expected.
• Don't yawn without covering your mouth.
• Don't point with your finger - it's considered rude. People rather point with their lips.
• Don't be a victim of mosquito-borne diseases - Avoid mosquito bites by using the repellent, long clothes and stay away from standing water if possible.
• Don't underestimate the ocean power when swimming - strong undertows and currents can be dangerous.
