Routine Vaccines

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages to Norway.

Measles

Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as part of the routine childhood vaccination series.

Rabies

Norway is free of dog rabies. However, rabies may still be present in wildlife species, particularly bats. CDC recommends rabies vaccination before travel only for people working directly with wildlife. These people may include veterinarians, animal handlers, field biologists, or laboratory workers working with specimens from mammalian species.

For travelers moving or traveling to TBE-endemic areas
TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary.
TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found.

Local laws

Drugs and drink driving laws are stricter in Norway than most other countries. Don't become involved with drugs of any kind. Possession of even small quantities can lead to heavy fines and/or imprisonment. Whale meat is available in Norway but importing it is illegal under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Homosexuality is legal and Norwegian law allows same sex marriages.

Oslo, the capital of Norway, sits on the country’s southern coast at the head of the Oslofjord. It’s known for its green spaces and museums. Many of these are on the Bygdøy Peninsula, including the waterside Norwegian Maritime Museum and the Viking Ship Museum, with Viking ships from the 9th century. The Holmenkollbakken is a ski-jumping hill with panoramic views of the fjord. It also has a ski museum.

Sexual Assault

Gun crime is increasing in Norway, but relatively rare. This is particularly problematic in Eastern Oslo and run-down areas where gang and drug-related crime is prevalent. Rape is another problem in Eastern Oslo, and women should avoid walking through these areas alone and particularly at night. The US Department of State reports that sexual assault crime increased in 2016, mostly large assault cases with many victims.

Piracy

Visitors should avoid buying bootleg goods in Norway, as there are strict restrictions on counterfeit and pirated material. If you buy something you could find yourself on the wrong side of the law in Norway very quickly.

Driving License

You do not need an International Driving Permit to drive here for periods up to 90 days. If you hold a paper driving licence you may need a 1968 International Driving Permit.

  • Don't ask questions concerning church - it can be taken as disrespect as many people don't attend any church there.
  • Don't expect Oslo fjord to be an actual fjord
  • Don't forget you can hike or pitch a tent in any unfenced land thanks to Right of Access.
  • Don't forget Svalbard archipelago is not part of the Schengen Agreement, even it belongs to Norway.
  • Don't be surprised you can't get any alcohol all the time - there are strict laws and you may find alcohol to be expensive and available only during certain hours.
  • Don't forget to wear reflectors when riding a bike or walking at dark.
