Measles

Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel. This dose does not count as part of the routine childhood vaccination series.

Rabid dogs are commonly found in Kazakhstan. If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other mammal while in Kazakhstan, there may be limited or no rabies treatment available.

Local laws

Kazakhstan has a secular constitution. You should respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and be aware of your actions to ensure that they do not offend other cultures or religious beliefs. Possession and use of drugs is illegal; if found guilty, you could face a lengthy prison sentence in basic conditions. Although homosexuality is not illegal, it is often not tolerated, especially outside the major cities. You must carry your passport at all times (not a photocopy). There are restrictions on photography near military establishments, border areas and some official buildings. Notices about these restrictions are not always indicated. Photographing airport facilities is prohibited. Many of the larger shops and supermarkets also prohibit photography. You can import a drone into Kazakhstan at airports or land border crossings without a licence. However, unlicensed use of drones in Kazakhstan will attract a fine, detention and confiscation of equipment. You can get a licence to use a drone from the Aviation Committee in Nur-Sultan. Applications for licences should include technical characteristics of the drone and details of planned use (when, where, how long).

Crimes

Lost wallet ploy

There are a number of common travel scams in Kazakhstan. One such scam is the "lost wallet ploy", where a thief claims to find a wallet and then tries to split the money with you. His partner saunters up and says it's his wallet, and forces you to give him money.

The twist on this scam is the person who comes looking for a lost wallet and demands you show your purse or pockets to prove you haven't stolen it. The thief then grabs all your belongings and darts away.

The fake police scam

There is another scam where locals pose as cops and demand money from you. You can tell who's a legitimate police officer by his approach – the real ones will always show their badges or produce them upon request.

Religion/Things Not to Do

  • The most common religion in Kazakhstan is Islam
  • Don't forget to shake hands (usually with both hands and a warm smile) when greeting. Women typically greet with a both-handed handshake or a slight nod of acknowledgement. Women friends may kiss on the cheek, and light hugs are typical for the family.
  • Don't forget it's a taboo for religiously observant men to touch women and vice-versa.
  • Don't necessarily touch another person during the conversations, especially between the different sexes.
  • Don't put the thumb in between your middle and index finger - it’s an obscene gesture, same as hooking two fingers together.
  • Don't forget to have your shoes always clean - shoes are essential, especially in business.
